Technické muzeum v Brně, Purkyňova 105, Brno 612 00

ORGANISERS
Working Group Metals of the Commission of Conservators-Restorers of the Czech Association of Museums and Galleries in cooperation with the Methodological Centre for Conservation of the Technical Museum in Brno.

DATE AND VENUE
The seminar will take place on 22 May 2025, from 10.00 to 16.00, at the Technical Museum in Brno, Lecture Hall, 4th floor, Purkyňova 105, Brno-Královo Pole.

AIM OF THE SEMINAR
The intention of the seminar is to present and discuss approaches to the conservation-restoration of metal artefacts with regard to current possibilities and trends in their material and technological research. The interdisciplinary examination of historical materials enables their precise identification, determination of origin and dating, recognition of originality and other features, including the causes and extent of damage. For this reason, it is crucial to choose conservation and restoration procedures that do not compromise or alter the dates or preserved residues, such as traces of surface treatment, remnants of original finishes, decoration, etc., which are subject to necessary investigation by various analytical or imaging methods. On the other hand, it is equally important that the methods of survey and sampling be as minimally invasive as possible to the object. Scientific research and the conservation-restoration of metal artefacts go hand in hand, and the mutual cooperation of the various professionals contributes to improving the treatment procedures and to obtaining as much information as possible about the history of the object. The aim of the seminar is to discuss the above topics using case studies of the survey and treatment of metal artefacts from practice, to highlight the risks of older conservation approaches, the possibilities of modern analytical methods and the correct principles of handling objects during survey and sampling.
