We are pleased to share an invitation of our colleagues from the Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové to the workshop “THE ART OF PAPER CONSERVATION II”—for employees of cultural institutions . As in May, this October series of workshops also includes a workshop for the general public.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVE
For employees of cultural institutions
- This follow-up workshop will offer additional practical techniques and skills in the field of conservation and restoration of historical documents and library collections. Participants will conduct solubility tests on pigments and recording media, which allow for the early detection of risks associated with subsequent restoration interventions, such as the removal of adhesive tape, wet cleaning, tear repair, sizing, underlaying, humidification, and disinfection.
- The program will also include an in-depth exploration of techniques for repairing paper tears and replacing missing sections. We will focus on working with a wider range of Japanese papers and on replacing missing parts, such as corners or sections of pages.
- The workshop will also introduce methods for repairing paper using special adhesive tapes designed for paper (Filmoplast and Lineco). Library staff will particularly appreciate these techniques due to their speed and the fact that they do not require subsequent drying or pressing. These methods can be used on both individual sheets and books.
- Another part of the workshop will be devoted to minor book repairs, particularly damaged spines.
- Finally, participants will learn how to make simple protective covers from acid-free materials with an alkaline reserve, which help ensure the long-term preservation of collection and library items.
- The workshop is intended for staff at cultural institutions and archives, as well as for those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the restoration of paper documents and have already mastered the basic techniques.

- You’ll not only gain new skills, but also a better understanding of how paper ages and how careful handling can help extend its lifespan.
The workshop is open to anyone interested—no prior experience is necessary. It focuses on simple, safe, and accessible methods you can use to care for family documents, old photographs, books, and prints.
PRESENTER
BcA. Romana Tošovská, Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové
- She graduated from the Institute of Restoration and Conservation Techniques in Litomyšl, o.p.s., with a specialization in the restoration and conservation of paper, book bindings, and documents.
- She is a restorer of paper, bookbindings, and documents with 24 years of experience in restoration at various institutions (the East Bohemian Museum in Pardubice, the Museum of Puppetry Cultures in Chrudim, the City of Prague Museum, and the National Library of the Czech Republic). She holds restoration licenses issued by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
- She has experience restoring book collections of old prints and manuscripts, as well as rare parchment documents bearing wax seals.
