EUROPEAN DAYS OF CONSERVATION-RESTORATION 2024

The Methodological Centre of Conservation of the Technical Museum in Brno together with the Commission of Conservators-Restorers of the Czech Association of Museums and Galleries and the Study Programme Chemistry and Technology of Materials for Conservation-Restoration of Masaryk University join the European Days of Conservation-Restoration 2024.

The aim of this pan-European event, which was first held in 2018 by the European Confederation of Conservator-Restorers Organisations (E.C.C.O.), is to:

• raise awareness among people of all ages about the importance of cultural heritage
• highlight the key role of conservators and restorers in saving and preserving the witnesses of our history in museums, galleries, heritage sites, archaeology and architecture.
• present the knowledge and specific skills, new technologies and high international standards that are required in order to carry out that profession.
• highlight that conservation-restoration is an interdisciplinary field that brings many innovations for cultural heritage research and sustainable tourism.

The event contributes to the recognition of the authenticity and uniqueness of objects of cultural value. Therefore, it is also important to support the education of young conservators and restorers and to promote related fields of study. For this purpose, the organizers have prepared a varied program of digital contributions, presentations and professional meetings, which will allow you to get to know the work of conservators and restorers both remotely and directly.

Methodological Centre of Conservation of the Technical Museum in Brno

• The website presents a restoration intervention on a unique treadle sewing machine of the American brand Wheeler-Wilson from 1867.
• In cooperation with the Restoration Workshop of the VSB – Technical University of Ostrava and the Metals Working Group of the AMG Commission of Conservators-Restorers, the Methodological Centre of Conservation has prepared a professional seminar “Modern Methods and History – Operation and Maintenance of Technical Monuments”, which will take place on 15–16 October 2024 at the Technical Museum in Brno.

• The Cheb Museum has prepared an educational program “Conservator-restorer’s workshop” on 18 October 2024 from 14:00 to 18:00, during which visitors will learn about the basic knowledge and skills that conservators-restorers of paintings, textiles and wooden artworks should have.
• The Central Bohemian Museum in Roztoky near Prague is hosting the exhibition “Dispite the Time” from 27/09/2024 to 20/02/2025, which presents its department of conservation and restoration and explains the key procedures its professionals use to protect and restore historically valuable artefacts, https://www.muzeum-roztoky.cz/akce
• The Museum of the City of Prague in cooperation with the University of Chemical Technology in Prague, Secondary School and Higher Vocational School of Arts and Crafts, University of Hradec Králové and Masaryk University organizes lectures on conservation-restoration of objects made of textile materials, wood, archaeological leather and reconstruction of the main museum building.
