Strategy for the conservation of collection items: Principles of long-term care for museum collections

The Strategy for the Conservation of Collection Items: Principles of Long-Term Care for Museum Collections is based on a proposal for framework standards for the qualified care of museum collections in the field of conservation and restoration, which were developed in the form of the Strategy for the Conservation of Collections. by the Methodological Center for Conservation of the Technical Museum in Brno in cooperation with the Commission of Conservator-Restorers of the Czech Association of Museums and Galleries and approved at its plenary meeting on September 9, 2019, in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm.

The revised version of the “Strategy for the Conservation of Collection Items: Principles of Long-Term Care for Museum Collections” was approved as implementing material for the the 2011 “Document on the Profession of Conservator-Restorer” at the plenary meeting of the Czech Association of Museums and Galleries – Conservator-Restorers Commission on September 10, 2025, in Olomouc and approved at the Czech Association of Museums and Galleries Senate meeting on October 7, 2025, in Prague.

The “Strategy for the Conservation of Collection Items” sets out the principles for the long-term care of museum collections in accordance with the “Document on the Profession of Conservator-Restorer” from 2011 and the applicable legislation of the Czech Republic. The aim of this strategy is to minimize damage or deterioration of collection items so as to ensure their permanent preservation in the public interest for present and future generations. To this end, it is desirable to apply the following approaches and principles of comprehensive care for museum collections (hereinafter referred to as “collections”) in museums, galleries, and other collection-building institutions (hereinafter referred to as “museums”).
